Serbia: A Journey Towards EU Membership
A Decade of Candidacy
Serbia's aspirations for European Union (EU) membership began in 2003, when it was identified as a potential candidate. By 2009, it had formally applied, and in 2012, it became a candidate for membership alongside nine other states.
Negotiations and Progress
Since 2012, Serbia has embarked on a series of negotiations with the EU. As of January 2022, six EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Council meetings have taken place, addressing various aspects of Serbia's progress towards EU standards.
Current Stance and Challenges
Serbia's non-alignment with EU foreign policy became apparent in February 2022 when it abstained from imposing sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. This divergence has raised questions about Serbia's commitment to EU values and principles.
